Earlier this year, the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness (USICH) and the Departments of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and Veterans Affairs (VA) developed a set of criteria to help communities assess their progress toward achieving the goal of ending Veteran homelessness. According to the agencies, ending Veteran homelessness is about:

• Connecting Veterans and their families who are experiencing homelessness now to permanent housing.
• Making sure that no Veteran experiences chronic or long-term homelessness again by putting robust systems into place to ensure that homelessness can  be prevented whenever possible -- and if it can't be prevented, that it is rare, brief, and non-recurring.

In response to feedback from the field, USICH, HUD and VA recently released refined criteria and benchmarks to clarify how they define ending Veteran homelessness to help guide communities as they take action to achieve this goal and measure progress.
