On January 24, 2013, the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions held a hearing on the state of the U.S. mental health care system. The committee organized the hearing in response to the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT. It was the first time the committee has addressed the issue of mental health since 2007. Among the experts offering testimony at the hearing were Pamela Hyde, the administrator of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Dr. Thomas Insel, Director of the National Institute of Mental Health, Michael Hogan, Former Commissioner of the New York State Office of Mental Health (NYSOMH) and Chairman of the President's New Freedom Commission on Mental Health, and Larry Fricks, Senior Consultant at the National Council for Community Behavioral Healthcare (NCCBH).
