SAMHSA's Webinar Series on Ending Chronic Homelessness

Monday, December 09, 2013

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is hosting a webinar series on Ending Chronic Homelessness. Each webinar will focus on a specific topic related to this goal, including the impact of the Affordable Care Act (ACA); the relationship between people who are homeless and the criminal justice system; and the role of supportive services.

The first webinar, "The Criminal Justice System and Chronic Homelessness," is scheduled on Thursday, December 12, 2013 at 2:00 - 3:30 PM EST. This technical assistance webinar will explore the many facets of the relationship of homelessness and the criminal justice system and show how policies within the criminal justice system may have an impact on homelessness. Presenters will discuss transitional planning prior to release for currently incarcerated persons and how this is key to the prevention of homelessness. It will explore the challenges persons with a criminal background face when applying or obtaining permanent housing and strategies that have made a difference.

The next webinar, "Services in Support of Reducing Chronic Homelessness," is scheduled on Thursday, December 19, 2013 at 2:00 - 3:30 PM EST.  This webinar will explore how services can and do play an important role in reducing chronic homelessness. Services outreach models in jails and prisons will be discussed, including Supplemental Security Income/Social Security Disability Insurance Outreach, Access, and Recovery (SOAR). Their success in accessing disability benefits will be highlighted using the Nashville 100K Homes model as an example. This webinar will explore how agencies are using evaluation/focus groups with participants and Evidence-Based Practices (EBPs) to successfully reduce chronic homelessness. The venue will also examine the core elements of permanent supportive housing and how to implement Permanent Supportive Housing with fidelity to the model.
