A recent NY times article featured the story of two individuals with disabilities who were offered integrated supported employment opportunities as a result of a Settlement Agreement between the U.S. Department of Justice and the State of Rhode Island after an ADA/Olmstead investigation found the state's day activity service system over-relied on segregated settings, including sheltered workshops and facility-based day programs, to the exclusion of integrated alternatives such as supported employment and integrated day services. The settlement agreement, which was entered into as a court-enforceable Consent Decree by the U.S. District Court for the District of Rhode Island, provides relief to approximately 3,250 individuals with Intellectual and developmental disabilities over ten years in the form of integrated supported employment and day services in the community.
