The National Center for Health Statistics, part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, recently released a report detailing the results from the first wave of the National Study of Long Term Care Providers. This report provides descriptive information about providers and consumers of long term care services in various settings. The report details information about consumers who are residents of nursing homes and residential care communities, patients of home health agencies and hospices, and participants of adult day services centers.

The key findings from the report include: about 8 million people were served by paid, regulated providers in 2012; providers differ by ownership; supply and size varied by region; providers differed by their levels of staffing and the staff certifications; use rates varied by sector and state; and users varied by sector in their demographic and health characteristics and functional status.
