NASMHPD Releases Report on the Vital Role of State Psychiatric Hospitals
The National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors (NASMHPD) has released a new report, "The Vital Role of State Psychiatric Hospitals", containing recommendations for the most appropriate role for state psychiatric hospitals within the context of a largely integrated, community-based system of care for people with mental illnesses.
The report, developed by NASMHPD's Medical Directors Council which held an Expert Consensus Work Group meeting in September 2013 attended by TAC Executive Director Kevin Martone, is not intended as advocacy for increased inpatient services or more psychiatric hospital beds, but rather for state psychiatric hospitals to be integrated within the continuum of recovery services that are part of a robust set of community services.
Recommendations are provided for improving community integration, state psychiatric hospital services and operations, and policies on all system levels.
