Key Amendments to McKinney-Vento Act to Help Homeless Students

On October 1, a number of new provisions to the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act took effect. These new provisions are intended to strengthen the ability of children and youth experiencing homelessness to enroll and succeed in school. Key changes include a greater emphasis on identifying children and youth experiencing homelessness; a presumption that keeping students enrolled in their school of origin is, in most cases, in their best interest; and the obligation to remove barriers that prevent children and youth experiencing homelessness from accessing academic and extracurricular activities.
