The U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) released the most recent edition of the Worst Case Housing Needs report.  HUD defines "worst case needs" as renters with incomes below 50% of the Area Median Income (AMI), who spend over half of their income on housing costs and or live in severely inadequate housing conditions.  The 2011 report found that the number of people with "worst case needs" for housing has dramatically increased to nearly 8,500,000 renters nationally, across demographic groups, household types, and geographical regions. Findings further support the need for affordable housing and rental subsidies to help reduce the housing burden on renters facings these worst case needs.
