HUD Issues Memorandum on Using TANF Funds to Assist Homeless Families
On February 20, 2013, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) published an Issue Memorandum (IM) identifying ways that states can use Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) funds to help families experiencing homelessness. The memorandum outlines the needs of families experiencing homelessness, such as temporary rental assistance and employment services, and allowable uses of TANF funds to help meet those needs. The memorandum highlights four states - Massachusetts, New Jersey, Utah and Washington - that have targeted TANF funds to meet the needs of families experiencing homelessness.
