On December 5^th, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced that $55.5 million in grants has been awarded to address the workforce needs of the health care system. The more than 240 grants will be used for improvements in training of health care professionals and increasing the size of the health care workforce in public health, behavioral health, healthcare workforce development, and dentistry.

While the majority of the funding will be used for nursing workforce development ($45.4 million), $2.4 million will specifically address the behavioral health needs of underserved populations through training of doctoral-level psychologists. The remaining funding will address: preventative medicine and public health through accredited residency programs ($3 million); the needs of the health care workforce through four health workforce research centers ($1.4 million); and development of dental health professionals in areas where there are currently shortages ($3.1 million).
