CMS Releases Bulletin on Use of Emergency Departments
Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) recently released an informational bulletin highlighting the need for and strategies to reduce non-urgent use of Emergency Department (ED) visits and to provide appropriate care in appropriate settings for Medicaid beneficiaries. The bulletin, entitled Reducing Non-urgent Use of Emergency Department and Improving Appropriate Care in Appropriate Settings, highlights three strategies states can use to reduce the number of non-urgent ED visits, which are:
- Broaden access to primary care services;
- Focus on frequent ED users;
- Target needs of people with behavioral health problems.
