CMS Releases 2014 Medicaid Income and Resource Standards
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services recently released the 2014 Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Spousal Impoverishment Standards. These standards have been updated in accordance with the changes in the SSI federal benefit rate and the Consumer Price Index.
The spousal impoverishment standards are a provision under Medicaid aimed at protecting a person from becoming impoverished when their spouse seeks institutional care, such as a nursing home. The 2014 SSI and Spousal Impoverishment Standards are used to determine the amount of income that can be protected for a spouse living in the community.
