On Friday, February 22, 2013, the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced that 25 states will receive funding through the State Innovative Model Initiative. This initiative is designed to encourage states to test new models for delivering services and issuing payments in multi-payer systems, with the goal of reducing costs and increasing the quality of services. Three types of grants were awarded:
- Six states (Arkansas, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Oregon & Vermont) will receive over $250 million for Model Testing Awards to implement and test their State Health Care Innovation Plans
- Three states (Colorado, New York, & Washington State) will receive Model Pretesting Awards to continue developing their plans, with the goal of beginning implementation within 6 months
- Sixteen states (California, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Michigan, New Hampshire, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, & Utah) will receive Model Design Awards to create innovative State Health Care Innovation Plans. These states would then be eligible to apply for an anticipated second round of funding to test their plans.
