CIHS Releases Report on Establishing Medical Health Homes for People with Mental Health and Substance Abuse Needs

Wednesday, August 21, 2013

On August 20, 2013 the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and Health Resource Services Administration (HRSA) joint Center for Integrated Health Solutions (CIHS) released a new report, Financing and Policy Considerations for Medical Health Homes for Individuals with Behavioral Health Conditions. To date, twelve states have been approved to use Medicaid funds for medical health homes, six of which include mental health and substance use disorders as an eligible category of chronic conditions.  This report provides an overview of states implementing health homes for mental health and substance abuse populations, including service design, quality measures, and health information technology (HIT).  It also offers tips on how states interested in establishing health homes for this population can request guidance from SAMHSA and the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
