CHCS RELEASES STRATEGIES TO REDUCE COSTS FOR SUPER-UTILIZERS

The Center for Health Care Strategies (CHCS) recently released a brief, "Strategies to Reduce Costs and Improve Care for High-Utilizing Medicaid Patients: Reflections on Pioneering Programs", highlighting key features for managing the complex care needs of Medicaid's high-utilizing patients (termed super-utilizers). Super-utilizers account for a disproportionate amount of Medicaid costs, and this brief offers insights for states, health plans, and providers on successfully addressing the needs of these patients, as well as reducing costs. The brief describes the characteristics of 14 current programs for super-utilizers, and identifies ten key trends for refining approaches to meet the needs of this complex population.
