On September 15, 2014, in support of recovery-oriented service expansion, the National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors (NASMHPD) released a toolkit to guide community providers and state hospitals in best practices for peer support supervision and retention - focus points that are essential to effectively integrating and/or expanding peer support services that have not been well-covered in previous materials. Also included in the toolkit is a discussion of the benefits of integrating the peer support model into service delivery; methods of integration - that is how to how to fund, recruit, train, certify and evaluate Peer Providers; and finally, Medicaid requirements for reimbursement.

Following health care reform and the integration of behavioral and primary health, the evidence-based practice of peer support is now eligible for Medicaid reimbursement in over 30 states. The NASMHPD toolkit will allow a new wave of well-trained peer providers to become incorporated into recovery-oriented services while easing the workload for clinical staff.
