The Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law recently released a report on how the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is creating integrated supportive housing opportunities for people with mental illnesses who are often inappropriately institutionalized or at risk of unnecessary institutionalization. The report, titled "A Place of My Own: How the ADA is Creating Integrated Housing Opportunities for People with Mental Illnesses," contains a brief history of deinstitutionalization, a listing of key community integration principles and related guidance issued by federal agencies including the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and a discussion of historical and current Olmstead settlement agreements.
