Results from the 2017 point-in-time (PIT) count will be combined with several other data sources to determine a baseline against which to measure future efforts at ending youth homelessness, according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and its federal partners. As the Unites States Interagency Council on Homelessness (USICH) explains, no single data source can give the complete picture of homelessness among this unique and vulnerable age group. Instead, valuable insights must be gained from PIT counts (in which homeless services staff and volunteers interview unsheltered individuals in several cities on a single night), local education departments, and other key sources. USICH notes that in recent years, communities have worked hard to improve the accuracy of their PIT counts in identifying young people who are homeless.
